While the fires in the Amazon have caught international attention, the vast rainforests in another part of the world – Africa – are also vanishing at a threatening rate as foreign investment rises. CDB interviewed Global Environment Institute, a Beijing-based NGO, to talk about their projects promoting sustainable Chinese investment and trade in Africa.
10,000 “agricultural talents for Africa” to receive training in China
Han Changfu, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, has announced that China will deepen agricultural cooperation with Africa by holding various training courses in China over the next three years to train 10,000 talents from Africa. Speaking a few days ago at the Forum on China-Africa Agricultural Cooperation in Sanya, the minister explained that China regards improving Africa’s comprehensive food production capacity as a key area of agricultural cooperation. Furthermore, China will support Africa to achieve basic food security by 2030, and help African countries explore poverty reduction paths that are in line with their own national conditions. The Public Security Department’s Overseas NGO Management Office in Zhejiang Province and the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Education recently issued a registration certificate for the local Representative Office of Hanns Seidel Stifftung (Germany).
Environmental group Airman traverses China looking for illegal polluters
Airman (好空氣保衛俠) is an environmental protection group founded by activist Zhao Liang in 2014. The organization brings together young people to travel the country armed with nothing but their eyesights, sense of smell and a pollution monitoring phone app to find and report illegal polluters. Since it’s founding, the organization has traveled to 28 provinces, investigated sites in 90 cities, and worked on more than 500 environmental rectification cases. China Charity Alliance holds summit and releases first nationwide charity agreement
On May 11, the China Charity Alliance held their Member Summit’s second session in Langfang, Hebei Province. The summit elected a new executive council and leadership structure. Member and Deputy Director of the Party Group of Civil Affairs Tang Chengpei was elected as executive council chairman. Zhan Chengfu, also a member and deputy minister of the Party Group of the Ministry of Civil Affairs as well as the director of the Social Organization Administration, attended the meeting and delivered an address. China brings satellite TV access to 1,000 Nigerian villages
The launching ceremony of the “Access to Satellite TV for 10,000 African Villages” Nigeria Project was held on January 14 in Kpaduma, a suburban village in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory. Kpaduma was chosen as one of the 1000 Nigerian villages taking part in this project to enhance access to satellite TV. The project is one of the China-Africa cooperation programs that came out of the Johannesburg Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in 2015. The 5th China-Africa People’s Forum held in Chengdu
The 5th?China-Africa People’s Forum was held in Chengdu on the 23-24 of July, jointly organized by the?China NGO Network for International Exchanges and the government of Sichuan Province. Over 200 representatives from more than 30 countries attended the forum. Themed “promoting civil society forces, facilitating Sino-African friendship and trust”, the forum is part of a series of events held prior to the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in September. The event began with Song Tao, Minister of the Foreign Relations Department of the CPC Central Committee, reading out President Xi Jinping’s congratulatory letter to the forum. 45 million Yuan marked for poverty alleviation in Sichuan
On the 6th of June, it was announced in the?conference of the provincial social organisations involved in deep poverty alleviation in impoverished counties that the Sichuan civil administration has arranged funds of 45 million RMB from 2018 to 2020 for a “seed fund” specifically to be used in projects for the alleviation of deep poverty in 45 counties. This year 35 provincial social organisations with the appropriate capacities, in a “one to one or one to many” (一對一或一對多) matching scheme, will take on specific projects within areas of deep poverty, and get involved in work to alleviate poverty in said areas. China to establish International Development Cooperation Agency
During?the fourth session of the first annual meeting of the Thirteenth National People’s Congress on March 13th, it was announced that a new state-level International Development Cooperation Agency (IDCA) will be set up to integrate the responsibilities of the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Foreign affairs concerning foreign aid. State councillor Wang Yong, entrusted by the State Council, stated that the IDCA will be targeted at giving full play to the role of foreign aid as a major instrument of Chinese diplomacy. Last week the office of ONGO management of the Tianjin Municipal Public Security Bureau held a “Service Day” event aimed at the representatives of ONGOs.
